Sofia does not just boast a stunning location but also a long history. Towards the south of the city the Witoscha mountain range starts to rise, with its 2,286 metre black summit. Sofia has been looking out over this summit for more than 5,000 years, so old is the city. Recent archaeological finds even point to a stone age settlement in the area some 8,000 years ago.
